ProAgria is a leading agricultural expert organisation in Finland, serving their members as well as other rural entrepreneurs. Proagria offers a broad selection of individualized services, as well as a wide selection of software solutions for various needs and purposes.
In the past trade fair sites organized by ProAgria were always promoted by creating new websites for each fair. This was a very cost-inefficient solution. ProAgria desired an easier way to organize and promote its many trade fairs related to agriculture such as Farmari, KoneAgria and Peltopäivä. The sites also needed to be fully responsive to cater to the significant number of fair attendees browsing the site on mobile devices.
The project started with the core concept of providing re-usability and customization. This was to allow the site to be ran as a separate website for each trade fair with minimal effort. As the project budget was very strict and the key features required were time consuming, it was agreed that the site would be built on top of a ready-made theme using Drupal as the content management system.
ThemeTastic was chosen as the theme foundation due to its in-built support for all devices and easy style customization through the admin interface. The customization functionality was further expanded upon to allow for more colors to be esily changed. With a few tweaks to the base theme and site structure, the first site was ready for content input.
Later a smaller add-on project was completed to automatically fetch and refresh the list of vendors registered to each trade fair. This was accomplished through an integration with ProAgria’s existing vendor registration service and was completed on time and on budget.
In addition to the features mentioned above the site also provides basic core features such as multilingual support. Site search is handled by Apache SOLR.
The trade fair site template was quickly put to use for the Farmari fair and shortly afterwards on Peltopäivä using a ready-made database blueprint, which had everything set up and ready for content input. To launch additional sites ProAgria merely needs to input new content, change the color scheme and site logo. In case of new languages being added the interface needs to be translated as well, which is easily managed in the admin interface.
Despite having different databases, all fair sites can be maintained as a single entity resulting in cost efficient maintenance. When security updates are needed or issues need to be solved, all sites receive the same changes as they run on the same Drupal installation.
